Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a condition that affects millions of Americans every year, causing numerous pauses in breathing throughout the night. If you suffer from chronic snoring, wake up with a headache, or have trouble getting a good night’s rest, you might be a victim of the sleep disorder. In that case, your dentist will likely recommend a sleep test to confirm a diagnosis. Not sure what that is? Read along as we explain how a sleep test works and what you can do to prepare for it.
What Is a Sleep Test?
A sleep test provides your dentist with valuable information to help them determine whether or not you suffer from sleep apnea. During testing, you’ll be monitored while you sleep at a special facility. Since they’ll have to evaluate your entire sleep cycle, you’ll be required to stay overnight for your study. You can expect to spend about 12 hours there and undergo a diagnostic medical test to evaluate your oxygen levels and other factors while you sleep. Don’t worry, the process is not invasive at all and does not require any type of surgery. You’ll just fall asleep, and they’ll observe your patterns overnight – it’s that simple!
How Can You Prepare for a Sleep Test?
If you suspect you have sleep apnea, your dentist might recommend that you keep a sleep diary before testing to track details about your sleep schedule and quality of sleep. On the day of your sleep test, you’ll need to bring the diary with you so your dentist can review the information.
Leading Up to Your Appointment
Are you taking any medications? If so, you’ll need to let your dentist know what they are. They might advise you to stop taking them to ensure the results of your sleep test are as accurate as possible. In the days leading up to your study, you should start preparing the overnight bag that you’ll have with you at the facility. Make sure you pack necessary toiletries, comfortable pajamas, a change of clothes, and your favorite pillow or blanket.
Day Before Your Appointment
The day before your sleep test, make sure you have everything you need for your appointment. You’ll need to take your insurance cards, a list of medications you’re currently taking, and a prepared overnight bag. On the day of your study, avoid drinking caffeine after 2 PM and do not drink any alcohol. If possible, try not to take a nap during the day either. Otherwise, you may have difficulty falling asleep when you’re at the facility.
Do you have an upcoming sleep test? Be sure to take the time to prepare for it by following the tips outlined above. That way, you can arrive at your appointment relaxed and stress-free!
